Dancing for Absolutely Everybody
This workshop is wonderful for teacher training or any gathering whose purpose is to help folks be comfortable with their bodies, with each other, and with their own learning process. It is designed for people who might find the idea of dance daunting. I take participants through a series of activities designed to get them moving in beautiful and unusual ways before they even notice that they’re dancing. Several of these activities originated with remarkable Washington DC choreographer Liz Lerman. A variety of wonderful music accompanies the dancing. One session is 1.5 hours. This workshop can be expanded to include more sessions.
Let the Music Move You
My goals as I work with elders in dance are these: to get everyone laughing and feeling good, to get bodies and minds moving; to give each participant the chance to create in movement. and to experience the power of dance to carry us beyond our limitations. Single or series workshops 1 hour long. I use familiar music to make elders comfortable with the idea of moving together, then add a variety of dance activities. Each session includes a question that I ask each participant to answer, which becomes an opportunity to talk about the past and to create a beautiful phrase of movement together.
Introduction to Choreography for Children
A single workshop or a 5-session series, this workshop introduces kids to the basics of choreography and gives them a chance to create a dance. Whether that dance is a duet, a trio or a group piece, whether the movement comes from Modern dance or Hip Hop depends on the group. Sessions might range from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.
Dance Residencies
I am available to do brief or extended residencies where participants build a simple dance piece for performance. The performance might deal with an issue of importance to the group. Often integrated into the work are oral history, poetry, singing, music, and other elements. Participants might be elders, children, adults or a combination.
Fees for all workshops above depend on duration and location. To inquire: joangreen@gmail.com.
